Project:-Polymer Designs - Novel Battery Separator Technology

Currently participating in NIREC’s OnTRAC:Start Program:

Principal Investigator:

Dr. Alan Fuchs, Associate Professor
Chemical and Materials Engineering
University of Nevada, Reno

Program:

OnTRAC:Start

Mentor:

Paul Vatistas

Dr. Alan Fuchs and Dr. Mark Pingle have developed a novel, safer and cheaper battery separator. Dr. Fuchs has been performing groundbreaking research in fuel cells and polymer membranes for many years, and saw an opportunity late last year to join up with Dr. Pingle (from UNR’s business school) and with the UNR/DRI Technology Transfer Office to work with the local business community to bring their technology to market.

With further support from NIREC, the team is seeking a number of federal grants for further research at UNR, and engaging with local industry, investors, and entrepreneurs to bring benefits to the Reno area.

Successes:

Created spin-out company named Polymer Designs
Introductions to 2 companies and have signed NDAs so further discussions can be held
Applied for SBIR funding

"I was highly impressed by the level of innovation from the inventors, by the depth of understanding from the reviewers, and by the collaborative nature of the interactions. All round, a great meeting"

- Peter Williams, CTO, Big Green Innovations, IBM, NIREC TCAB Member, on NIREC's Quarterly Reviews
