Borland Supports NIREC’s Vision for a Robust Clean Energy Economy in Nevada
NIREC today announced that it has appointed Walt Borland President and CEO of the organization effective immediately. Borland replaces James A. Croce, who has served as NIREC’s President and CEO since June 2009 and led the organization to its nationally recognized role in accelerating emerging clean energy technologies to market and supporting industry growth in Nevada and the broader region. Croce, who stepped down for personal reasons, remains as an Executive-in-Residence with NIREC and will actively support the management transition over the coming months.

With an emphasis on strengthening its Southern Nevada presence, the Nevada Institute for Renewable Energy Commercialization (NIREC) today announced the receipt of an NV Energy Foundation grant to support the nonprofit’s mission of accelerating innovations in clean energy technology and deployment. This grant and NV Energy’s participation in NIREC’s Innovation Partner Program will increase resources dedicated to growing the Las Vegas region’s clean energy industry.

Report lays the groundwork for how to grow the state's economy through innovation
Gov. Brian Sandoval today announced the release of “The SILVER Spark for Nevada: Sustainable Innovation Leading a Vital Economic Renaissance,” a report highlighting Nevada’s industry innovation strength areas with the commercialization potential to form the foundation of a more diverse economy for the state. The report was jointly released by the Office of the Governor, the Office of the Lt. Governor, the Nevada Commission on Economic Development and the Nevada Institute for Renewable Energy Commercialization.

As regional accelerator, NIREC will nurture the next generation of high growth entrepreneurs as part of the Administration’s Startup America initiative
NIREC has been selected as a Regional Accelerator to mentor clean energy startups as part of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Entrepreneurial Mentor Corps (EMC). This new national mentoring initiative pairs high growth businesses with mentors who can help support these companies through early-stage challenges and increase the businesses’ chances for success. NIREC is one of only four accelerators selected from 75 organizations.

Business Development through Renewable Energy Contract Awarded to NIREC (RFP 1902)
NIREC has been selected to support the statewide growth of renewable energy industry clusters. Bringing together Nevada’s existing and would-be renewable energy suppliers, the NIREC team will facilitate partnerships to attract both domestic and international RE companies across the value chain. In addition to the NSOE, the Nevada Commission on Economic Development and the state’s regional economic development organizations are key stakeholders in this effort.

Dynamic Ecosystem Approach to Renewable Energy Commercialization
While many may favor a development theory that relies on a static ecosystem (or network) and routine replication of knowledge drawn from case studies, NIREC's Director of Operations Li Han Chan and Entrepreneur-In-Residence Nicola Kerslake argue that a dynamic ecosystem (or network) developed uniquely for each new innovation helps circumvent inadequacies in the broader commercialization infrastructure and provides the basis for the "technology pull" approach used by NIREC for renewable energy commercialization.
